Any exercise that raises your heart rate 60-85% of your maximum rate (based on your age) for 30 or more minutes will improve your cardio health.
Take it from someone who's been victimized by a heart attack at age 49 (I'm 53 now). a brisk 35-45 minute walk on the treadmill does wonders.

1. one form of cardio is likely to work different muscles than another would
2. varying your workouts are more likely to keep you from getting bored and ceasing your workouts altogether. this helps to prevent your workouts sessions from becoming so monotonous.
brisk walking is easier on your joints than running and sprinting. if you are going to run or sprint, try doing it on softer surfaces that will give a little (like dirt or grassy areas) rather than pavement or concrete.
both are great for the heart, but running/sprinting DOES get that heart pumping faster, so really do eaither one your *heart* desires!!
