Today, the average American eats too much processed food which is often laden with dangerous excess trans fats. This dietary phenomenon may help explain long term trends including obesity, increases in diabetes (including childhood diabetes), and cardiovascular disease--all of which have a direct negative impact on heart health.
Since it is one of the fundamental building blocks of the heart and cardiovascular system, DHA is important for normalizing certain blood lipids. Studies have shown that DHA lowers triglyceride levels and in some cases, may elevate HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Improved HDL to LDL ratios is credited with reducing the clotting ability of platelets and therefore the incidence of dangerous blood clots. Technically, the triglyceride-lowering ability of DHA results from the inhibition of lipogenesis, which is the complex process within the body of triglyceride synthesis. Bottom line: we need this nutrient to ultimately reduce the risk of heart disease.
Since DHA fish oil supplements are now widely recommended by doctors to their patients with a history of heart disease, a good first step would be look at your family history to make a general determination about heart disease in your family. In conjunction with the results of a complete physical, you can formulate an accurate heart disease risk profile. As always, be sure to consult your doctor or nutritionist before you begin taking any vitamins or supplements.
